How to Calculate ROI for a Tax Resolution Firm

A useful ROI estimate starts with your own case volume and measured work, not a promised percentage or an assumed reduction in review.

Automation ROI is not just the time it takes to generate a draft. Tax resolution teams should include document collection, preparation, corrections, practitioner review, and follow-up with the client. Compare the full process before and after introducing a tool, using the same type of case and a consistent definition of completion.

1. Establish a baseline

Select one repeatable task, such as preparing a 433-F from a complete set of financial records. For several representative cases, record minutes spent collecting files, entering values, clarifying gaps, and reviewing the result. Note exceptions and case complexity; an unusually simple case is not a reliable baseline.

2. Measure the assisted workflow

Time the same steps with automation in place, including upload, setup, checking sources, corrections, and final approval. Rima supports 433-F, 433-B, and 433-A (OIC) preparation with flagged gaps for review. It does not remove the need for professional judgment.

3. Calculate net value

Monthly hours saved = (baseline minutes per case − assisted minutes per case) × monthly case count ÷ 60. Multiply by the relevant fully loaded hourly labor cost to estimate monthly labor capacity released. Then subtract tool costs, onboarding time, and any added review or rework costs. For a percentage ROI, divide net benefit by total cost and multiply by 100. If cost is zero or unknown, do not report a percentage.

The 433-F case study reports a change from about 90 minutes to 30 minutes for one firm’s preparation process. Use that as a case-specific reference, not as an assumed input for your practice. P&L assembly is a different workflow; measure it separately rather than combining its timing with collection-form preparation.

4. Recheck the result

Compare similar cases over time. If saved preparation minutes are offset by rework, update the estimate. Also record less easily priced benefits—such as clearer handoffs—as observations rather than inventing a dollar figure.
